plastique is a 2 oscillator subtractive synth, using the 31 waveforms from the Casio HT-700 synth and some enhancements to the originals feature set. It does lofi 80s sounds but also so much more, with a configurable filter (up to 16 poles), a pitch envelope for percussion, an arp, tempo sync delay & LFO, chorus and some lofi instability. Designed to perform a million tasks, in a millions different shapes and sizes, the incandescent lightbulb illuminated human existence and enabled the world to finally and truly find its way out of the dark. Over the generations, this old filament-syle lightbulb and the various offspring have served humanity well. Indeed, the very concept of a brilliant idea is most often signified by this single iconic image. However, as populations have explode and resources ever diminish, that brilliance is becoming a luxury we’re no longer able to afford. The grave inefficiencies of Edison’s incandescent bulb have at long last forced us to move toward Tesla’s far superior fluorescent design, with its vastly longer life and lower energy consumption, heat output and fire danger. Yes, the incandescent puts out warmer, more pleasing light than most current fluorescents. But at what cost? Just like their vacuum tube cousins, as beautifully as they perform, these too will soon be a rare anachronism sought by the purist, but long forgotten by the masses.
The fragile and inherently musical bell-like aspect of the old incandescent bulb has always fascinated us and we knew that time was running out for this poor little device. That is why we must now bring you Luminabells – the mysterious and angelic essence of the simple ordinary light bulb, captured as a tiny, starry galaxy of humble and yet beautiful sounds. We recorded all manner of sizes and shapes of the old filament style incandescent bulb, lovingly sculpted into a rich collection of tuned and un-tuned percussion, sustaining melodic tones and otherworldly effects.
We recorded a number of different sizes and shapes of bulbs, using a variety of playing articulations to explore the sonic potential of each one. We tapped with fingers, palms, sticks, mallets, other bulbs and other implements, focusing on each timbre and tone that we could bring out of each lightbulb. We paid special attention to vibrating the unique filament in each one as much as possible without breaking it or the glass bulb itself.
The sound recorded for this library were all very quiet, produced by often very small and usually very fragile glass bulbs. In order to amplify many of these musical sounds up to usable levels, some low frequency rumble and high frequency hiss has also been unavoidably boosted. We’ve left these impurities in place deliberately, rather than filtering them out, in order to both preserve the most delicate aspects of these sounds and to broaden the creative potential in these sounds. and allow those impurities to become added complexity and flavor.

Actually, Spotlight Strings started out as “Solo Strings 3″ back in 2008. I was experimenting with Kontakt’s LFO abilities to simulate string vibrato. This was due to the fact that I wanted to be able to have the user manipulate vibrato in any way so as to suit his or her needs. At that time, it seemed there was really no way to realistically alter vibrato speed, intensity or fade-in time in real time by merely using samples and crossfading. So LFO manipulation seemed to be the solution. And also at that time, it seemed to me that there was just no convincing way to simulate a good string player’s vibrato using Kontatk’s LFO’s back then. It was ok, but not good enough.
This was until I started really digging into Kontakt’s LFO structue and some other related features. So it seemed, at least in theory, that there could be some possibilities. Sure enough, after a lot of sampling, and re-sampling and playing around with a bunch of Kontakt’s modules, I found what I thought was a very convincing vibrato emulation. And after getting really good results from a single solo, I thought to myself, “Why stop there?” Since I have an arsenal of great string instruments, I decided that I would record at least 4 of them and then try to combine them so as to create not only a bank of 4 soloists, but up to 4 in any combination. It proved harder than I thought. All kinds of clever randomization and tone colorings were needed in order for the 4 soloists to blend together without weird-sounding phasing and chorusing. Once that task was complete, I thought it would be really neat to see how all of this would sound combined with a big string section. So I took some of the samples from Concert Strings 2, and put them behind the new soloists. The result, in my opinion, was very promising. However, to make this all work really well, I needed to completely re-script the Concert Strings 2 samples to fit this new sound.
Spotlight Strings is a SOLO STRING library comprised of 4 soloists per section and an optional “Ripieno”* backup section. So it’s 4 solo string libraries in 1, and THEN some!

Progressive Clavi D6 is two sets of samples from the classic Clavinet, sampled as usual to worn tape on 60s valve equipment, to emulate the characteristics of the Mellotron. There are over 40 patches each for ESX24 and Kontakt 4.2.2 – the intent of this pack is to explore new sonic possibilities from the Clavinet. Compatible with NNXT and Structure but no patches available. Progressive Clavi D6 can emulate bass, distorted guitar as well as gentler stringed instruments, and works really well for early 70s jazz/prog style electric piano (soft machine etc). Responds nicely to distortion and wah, and due to the valve/tape source of the samples. It also sounds great played through a valve amp – perfect for live. The developer has used an extreme azimuth setting on the tape heads, creating a more ‘damaged’ and brittle sound. The artifact flecks enable bite on low settings with the clarity of the instrument retained.

We recorded the sound that different metallic items produce when you hit them. (Mainly with a small wrench) 22 monolith nki files, each nki contains 14 samples. That’s a total of 308 unique samples.

The Xylophone is an ancient and common member of the percussion family, specifically the selection of pitched mallet percussion. It is formed of a line of pitched wooden (or synthetic) blocks. When hit with a mallet, the instrument produces a tone. Resonators (in the form of tubes) under the blocks give the instrument an added ring. Mallets may vary from a soft yarn mallet to a very hard rubber mallet (more suitable for full orchestral work), or in some cases (to the detriment of the instrument), metal mallets. This virtual instrument includes three different mallet settings, recorded with two sets of microphones including Round Robin and multiple velocity layers for loads of fun! NB: This product uses the mod wheel.
